Littleton Washington's Journal
Published in Paperback by Xlibris Corporation (July, 2001)
Authors: Douglas Lee Gibboney and L. Quinton Washington
Average review score:

FROM THE AUTHOR
Born in Washington, D.C., to one of the First Families of Virginia, Littleton Q. Washington attended Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, before securing a clerkship at the U.S. Treasury Department. In 1855, he joined the U.S. Customs House in San Francisco and became embroiled in that city's Vigilante Uprising. Dismissed from office during James Buchanan's administration, Washington made a wild and dangerous journey home across Mexico, which was then entering a bloody reform war.
An ardent secessionist, Washington secured a lieutenant's commission in the Confederate Army and served at First Bull Run. He briefly edited the Richmond Examiner before joining the Confederate State Department where he worked with Judah Benjamin for the balance of the war. He knew most of the C.S. government's top people and was a close friend of Mary Chesnut.
This journal is a fascinating character study of one man caught up in the most turbulent period of American history.

Almost entirely Littleton's story in his own words
Littleton Washington's Journal is the assembled character study of Littleton Q. Washington, an ardent secessionist who served as a lieutenant in the Confederate Army at First Bull Run, and later worked with Judah Benjamin for the balance of the war. Though aptly edited by Douglas Gibboney for reader accessibility, and with informative historical notes, Littleton Washington's Journal is almost entirely Littleton's story in his own words. Highly recommended for Civil War buffs interested in seeing the Civil War from the perspective of one of its many soldiers.

Living With Dinosaurs

Authors: Patricia Lauber, Douglas Henderson, and Doug Henderson
Average review score:

Beautifully illstrated
This is one of the best dinosaur books availible. Even if your child is not a huge dinosuar fan, this book will probably appeal to them.

LIVING WITH DINOSAURS
This is a fantastic dinosaur book, intended for youngsters but enjoyable by older dinosaurophiles as well! LIVING WITH DINOSAURS explores the various habitats of early Late Cretaceous Montana and their inhabitants, which include not only dinosaurs (famous ones being Maiasaura, Corythosaurus, Albertosaurus, and Troodon) but their neighbors (pterosaurs, marine reptiles, sharks, primitive seabirds, mammals, and others), hence the name of the book. Henderson's artwork is very dramatic, very beautiful, and very impressive, and fans of dinosaur art (such as myself) will simply gobble them up. A definite must for ANY dinosaurophile's library! -- Rachel K. Clar

Lost Tai'-Chi Classics from the Late Ch'Ing Dynasty (Chinese Philosophy and Culture)
Published in Paperback by State Univ of New York Pr (August, 1996)
Author: Douglas Wile
Average review score:

Very Highly Recommended!
This book translates and analyzes four collections of recently released 19th century manuscripts on tai chi that represent a significant addition to the seminal literature. These newly available texts allow Wile to make a fresh survey of longstanding issues: the origins of tai chi; the authorship of the classics; the differences between Wu, Yang, and Li, and the roles of Chang San-feng, Wang Tsung-yueh, Chiang Fa, and Chang Nai-chou. The development of tai chi chuan in the 19th century is explored in the context of China's cultural response to the challenge of the West and the role of body-centered arts in Asia in the midst of the ongoing search for national identity. Wile has produced a scholarly and articulate tour de force that represents an enormous contribution to our understanding and appreciation of tai chi chuan.

Serious Tai Chi
In a market saturated with nonsense that passes as tai chi, it is refreshing that someone has taken the trouble to publish something as potentially useful as this book. Not only does it provide several very old texts on tai chi which were written by acknowledged masters, but it also explores the history of tai chi in a more scholarly manner, rather than passing on half truths about "my teacher once told me that his teacher told him...". Thanks to Douglas Wile for raising the bar on tai chi literature in the US. Hope to see more like this one.

Managing the Commons
Published in Paperback by Indiana University Press (April, 1998)
Authors: John A. Baden, Douglas S. Noonan, and William D. Ruckelshaus
Average review score:

It's not human to be altruistic
This collection of essays explores how individuals view commonly-owned resources. The clear conclusion is that people are biologically selfish: each person sees his/her own interests as more important than the group's interests. Altruism doesn't work as a policy. This flies in the face of common wisdom. I wish this book could be made standard reading for all high-school students. It explains the population's apparently self-defeating habit of destroying their own habitat.

Good Stuff
Very informing information...Innovative, intuitive, interesting. -B. Baggins

The Greatest Jet Fighter In The History of Military Aviation
This is an excellent book on the F-4. Lots of technical info and lots of pictures of the F-4 in Vietnam. This book covers the F-4E and the last chapter covers the F-4G Wild Weasel in Desert Storm. The Phantom is the all time greatest jet fighter the United States military ever had. I also reccomend "Spirit In The Skies" by Jon Lake.

One of the best books on the F-4 I have ever read.
I received this book last year as a gift for Christmas. It was very informative and it taught me several things I didn't know. It has some great photos and drawings. I liked the color section. It has some good photos. Well, after reading it, I would recommend this book to ANY F-4 enthusiast!

The Memory of Judgment: Making Law and History in the Trials of the Holocaust
Published in Hardcover by Yale Univ Pr (01 May, 2001)
Author: Lawrence Douglas
Average review score:

Wonderful Book (As discussed on my Radio Program)
I read Mr. Douglas's book carefully and with fascination. It is, in my opinion, a profoundly important book; not just about the Holocaust but about many of the other issues it addresses, political, psychological, legal and historical. It is essential for anyone studying or practicing (or just interested in) International Criminal Law and Politics to read this book.
What we now take for granted as life and death international issues: Crimes Against Humanity, Genocide, etc. had their foundations in the Nuremberg, Eichmann and other trials discussed in this book.
It's a serious book, not for reading in the Dentist's office but will open your mind in any number of directions.
A superb achievement.

Riveting, Insightful and Timely
The Memory of Judgement is a terrific and very timely book. Lawrence Douglas offers an exciting, compelling account of major Holocaust Trials from the Nuremberg and Eichmann Trials up through the recent trials of Holocaust denier Ernst Zundel.

Douglas' historical account is very compelling reading, from the standpoint of an exciting, well-crafted narrative, and, more impressively, because it steadily offers insight on very tough questions surrounding how to bring the perpetrators of atrocities to justice in a manner that also educates the larger public. As a reader, I was struck by the clarity with which the author describes the awesome, complex challenges facing prosecutors in six different trials that span more than fifty years, and by the convincing lines of connection drawn between these trials which vary greatly in setting and context.

At a time when we are in the process of bringing Slobodan Milosevic to trial for his crimes in Kosovo; at this moment when we are struggling with how to best bring the perpetrators of the terrorist attacks of September 11 to justice, this book is a provocative take on the grave challenges and responsibilities in using the courtroom to do legal and educational justice to atrocity. Ultimately, one finishes Douglas' book with a fascinating new framework for understanding these contemporary issues, realizing that past trials, if their lessons are applied, can serve as models when approaching present perpetrators.

A perfect visual guide to IE 5
In all of my introducory internet classes I have to introduce a textbook to fill the parts that I do not have the time to explain or need more clarification. Internet Explorer 5 at a Glance is that book. It is the best book available on the market for elementary and intermediate learners of Internet Explorer. With the help of lots of images it covers the main features of the browser. It also has a practical and to the point section on Frontpage Express. Outlook Express and Netmeeting are the other applications for which you can find more information in the book. Clear, visual, and to the point.

100% of what I want about IE 5
The Best Book I have ever saw about IE 5... it simply explains all aspects of Internet Explorer 5 including Outlook Express .. simply everything with easy to follow instructions...

Modern Psychology and Ancient Wisdom: Psychological Healing Practices from the World's Religious Traditions
Published in Hardcover by Haworth Press (January, 2003)
Authors: Sharon G Mijares, Neil Douglas-Klotz, Dwight Judy, and Sheldon Kramer
Average review score:

A book whose time has come!
If ever such a book of wisdom and understanding was needed in world, now is the time! As our personal and collective awareness have become raw with violence perpetrated upon ancient separateness and hatred, this book becomes a must read over and over again. It is a profound resource for all of our altars - a multifaceted and powerful way to focus our prayers for wholeness and for healing - for each other and for our world.

A Serious Guide
Now that we've opened our minds to alternative healing, we have found that many of these spiritual practices have always been there! Modern Psychology and Ancient Wisdom is a guidebook to the psychological healing practices of the world's religious traditions. In her introduction to the book, editor and co-author Sharon Mijares guarantees us that this is not a treatise on dogma. She's right. It's a serious guide to spiritual healing practices detailed by thoughtful scholars and teachers qualified to share the power of spirituality. The book will be extremely helpful to practitioners, but this anthology of stories, chants, dances, and meditations is not simply a guide for professionals. It's a superb collection for the body/mind/spirit of the common reader as well.
